Aaliyah, 22, 1/16/79-8/25/01

In August 2001 she flew to the Bahamas to film a video, "Rock the Boat." When her crew piled into the plane to return home, they insisted on taking all their heavy equipment, so the plane was hundreds of pounds over the weight it could carry. The pilot had also obtained his license fraudulently and was alcohol and cocaine in his system. Two hundred feet from the runway, the plane crashed into a marsh. There were no survivors.

Kurt Cobain, 27, 2/20/67-4/5/94

On April 8, 1994, an electrician arriving to install security lights found Cobain lying on the floor. At first the electrician thought he was sleeping. A coroner later estimated that Cobain had shot himself three days earlier.

Ian Curtis, 23, 7/15/56-5/18/80

Curtis suffered from epilepsy, but his performing style was sufficiently frenzied that at times crowd would not know if he were having a seizure or simply performing.

Sept. 30, 1955,  he took his new Porsche 550 Spyder for a drive along U.S. Route 466 near Cholame, Calif. Donald J. Turnupseed, coming in the opposite direction in a 1950 Ford Coupe, crossed over into Dean's lane while attempting to turn off the road and hit Dean head-on. Turnupseed, who received minor injuries, was not given a ticket. He told police he never saw Dean coming.

Sept. 18, 1970, after drinking some wine and taking a big handful of sleeping pills, he choked to death on his own vomit.

Tupac Shakur, 25, 6/16/71-9/13/96

hehad just finished jail time when he attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996. As he was leaving with his music business partner Suge Knight, there was an altercation with gang overtones. A few minutes later, a car pulled alongside Knight's SUV, in which Tupac was riding shotgun, and fired 13 or 14 shots, four of which hit Tupac. He died six days later of internal bleeding. No one has ever been arrested in his death, which shook the hip-hop world.
